Vice Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Park Beom-soo visited the Korea Forest Service's Central Forest Disaster Situation Room at the Daejeon office on the morning of the 23rd to report on the recent forest fire outbreak and response.
In late March, the weather was dry and accompanied by strong winds, causing temperatures to rise sharply, and medium- to large-scale forest fires were occurring simultaneously across the country.
At 3:30 p.m., the national forest fire disaster alert was raised from "caution" to "borderline" and "severe" levels, and efforts were made to prevent and contain forest fires.
Vice Minister Park said, "When a forest fire breaks out, it not only reduces forests that have been cultivated for a long time to ashes in an instant, but also causes damage to the surrounding areas.
"It has the potential to destroy the precious property and lives of the people living in these areas," he said, emphasizing that the Forestry Agency is working closely with local governments, the Fire and Disaster Management Agency and other relevant agencies to put out wildfires as quickly as possible and prevent them from spreading."
The HYERI helicopters, fire engines and other equipment used in wildfire extinguishing operations were thoroughly inspected in advance to ensure maximum safety, while the personnel on-site were given ample rest and a stable communication system was established.
"The dry weather will continue for the time being, and a small spark can quickly turn into a large forest fire," Vice Minister Park said.
Therefore, we ask that each citizen take special care to prohibit illegal burning in forest areas and to manage flammable materials."
