Han Dong-hoon criticizes Lee Jae-myung's acquittal in appeal, saying it ”gave politicians a free pass to make false statements” (South Korea)
Han Dong-hoon, who served as the head of South Korea's ruling party People Power Party, said on the 26th that the Seoul High Court had indicted Lee Jae-myung, head of the main opposition Democratic Party, on charges of violating the Public Offices Election Act.
He criticized the Supreme Court's acquittal of the charges, saying it "gave politicians a free pass to make false statements." He then argued that "the Supreme Court should swiftly correct the ruling."
On the same day, Han posted on his Facebook page, "The acquittal of the 6th Criminal Division of the Seoul High Court for violating the election law goes against the law, the truth, and the common sense of the people," and stated the above.
The Seoul High Court Criminal Division 6-2 held a hearing for the appeal trial on the charges of publishing false facts under the Public Offices Election Act and announced that it would “overturn the original ruling and acquit Lee.”
In the first trial, Lee was sentenced to one year in prison, suspended for two years, and had his election invalidated. Han said, "Those with power treat 'falsehood' as 'opinion,' and a guilty verdict can be overturned to innocence.
If so, there can be no justice," he said. He also expressed concern that "if this ruling is finalized, any falsehoods will go unpunished in any South Korean election."
He further criticized the ruling, saying, "This ruling gives politicians a free pass for making false statements." He added, "In order to establish justice and democracy, the Supreme Court has made a mistake.
The ruling should be rectified immediately," he reiterated.
