Help develop healthy eating habits among college students, who have a high rate of skipping breakfast, and promote the use of Korean rice.
The purpose of the initiative is to contribute to the promotion of rice consumption. In addition to addressing nutritional imbalances, the initiative will also supplement farmers' incomes and stimulate rice consumption.
The government will subsidize 1,000 won for each school, while Seoul city will subsidize 1,000 won for each school. This year's project targets three schools: Baehwa Women's University, Sangmyung University, and Seong Kyu (INFINITE) Ngwang University.
In Jongno-gu, based on the applications from the schools, 3.7 million won (approximately 377,000 yen) was awarded to Peihwa Women's University, 8.88 million won (approximately 905,000 yen) to Sangmyung University, and 50 million won to Sungkyunkwan University.
These universities will use the support money to create a balanced breakfast menu that includes not only rice dishes but also bread, cereals, and noodles made from domestically grown rice, and provide them to students.
The 1,000 won breakfast project, which began in 2023, is aimed at college students who have a higher food budget than elementary, middle and high school students who are eligible for public meals.
The policy, which focuses on student life, has been well received by students. In addition to providing financial support, Jongno-gu plans to simultaneously monitor the hygiene conditions of student cafeterias and the use of Korean rice.
Chung Moon-hong, head of the district office, said, "This is a meaningful project that will help develop healthy eating habits among university students and promote rice consumption among farmers." He added, "Students can now eat breakfast at no cost."
I hope everyone eats well and starts their day with enthusiasm."
