Han also appeared on the KBS TV program "Let's Win Together Against the Forest Fire Victims" on the same day and said, "In response to this disaster, we will pass the supplementary budget proposal.
Han said, "We will actively use the current budget, but we will also secure additional financial resources and work together with local governments, the central government and the political world to solve housing and seed problems."
Prior to this, Deputy Prime Minister for Economy and Finance Choi Sang-mok held a meeting on the afternoon of the same day to discuss the urgent issues.
At the meeting of relevant economic ministers, the government said, "In order to resolve urgent issues, we will promote a 10 trillion won (approximately 1.185 trillion yen) 'essential supplementary budget' that includes only projects that can be implemented quickly.
Regarding the revision of disaster countermeasures, he said, "The scale of disasters is becoming increasingly large due to changes in the climate environment. We need to come up with countermeasures that assume the worst case scenario or ways to overcome it."
"I felt that the various measures that agencies such as the Ministry of Environment and the Korea Forest Service usually have in place were not effective in the event of such a major disaster.
Han said of those who worked to put out the fire, "You did your best day and night, even in the harsh conditions. I am deeply moved, and the government will continue to support you."
"I thought I had to work harder," he said. "The government and the political world should be better prepared and put in more effort for such fine people.
I felt that wasn't the case," he added.
