韓国大統領選代行が選挙管理委員長と「通話」…8日の国務会議で「選挙日」を決定?
South Korean presidential election surrogate has ”phone call” with election commission chairman... Will the ”election date” be decided at the Cabinet meeting on the 8th?
South Korean Acting President (Prime Minister) Han Deok-soo held a telephone call with National Election Commission Chairman Roh Tae-ak on the 4th to discuss fair and transparent election management.
Han said, "In the midst of the recent political turmoil, the most important key to restoring public trust is fair and transparent election management. At this point, the president
"The most important thing is to hold the election properly," the Prime Minister's Office said. "This election is not just about electing a new president, it is about the future of the Republic of Korea and national unity."
"This will be an important opportunity for the election to be united," he said. "The government will also actively cooperate and thoroughly inspect and manage the election so that it can be trusted by all citizens."
In response, Chairman Roh said, "We will continue to promote fair election management without any hindrances in the future. We are currently working closely with the government to ensure that necessary cooperation is carried out.
"We will continue to actively discuss this," he said. In particular, it is highly likely that the issue of "setting the date for the next presidential election" will be brought up at the regular Cabinet meeting scheduled for the 8th of this month.
According to the Public Offices Election Act, the Acting President must announce the date of the next presidential election at least 50 days before the election.
The date for the presidential election must be set. The South Korean Constitution also stipulates that "an election to select a successor president must be held within 60 days of the vacancy of the presidency."
Considering that the government and the political world need to secure as much time as possible to prepare and campaign for the next presidential election, it is necessary to consider the situation after the impeachment of then-President Park Geun-hye.
It is highly likely that the election date this time will also be set at "60 days later," just as it was when the previous election was held.
