Police have checked CCTV footage from the area, but have yet to identify the person who dumped the live ammunition in the trash can. A police official said, "There was a distance between the CCTV footage and the trash can.
"The investigation will continue while analyzing the video," he said. There was also an incident at Incheon Airport in March last year in which live ammunition was discovered.
At the time, a cleaning crew on a Korean Air flight about to take off found a live 9mm round under a passenger's seat and notified the authorities.
In July of the same year, a live 7.62mm round was discovered during inspection of the carry-on baggage of a flight attendant about to board a Korean Air flight from Incheon to Bangkok at Terminal 2.
Before returning home, the flight attendant brought back a pouch that he had used as a child from his parents' home and stored it in his bag to check later, when he discovered that it contained old live ammunition.
Additionally, in September last year, approximately 300 live rounds of ammunition were discovered at a rubbish collection site on the east side of the first passenger terminal, but investigations by the relevant authorities found no evidence of criminal involvement.
