On the 6th, after the party meeting held at the National Assembly in Yeouido, Seoul, Rep. Ahn told reporters that he plans to hold a presidential election.
"If I run for president, I plan to make a declaration at Gwanghwamun in the middle of this week," Ahn said. "There are demonstrations going on at Gwanghwamun right now, but this place is the home of our nation.
"It should be the center and a symbol of national unity," he said. Regarding National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-sik's proposal to hold a constitutional amendment vote along with the presidential election, Rep. Ahn said, "I
"It's not that different from the local elections a few weeks ago when they tried to hold a constitutional amendment vote," he said, adding, "The current excessive imperial presidency and the National Assembly must curtail their powers in order to realize the separation of powers.
"We must make up for the shortcomings of the 1987 system and revise the constitution next year," he said, adding, "All candidates in the party elections and those running in the general election have pledged to revise the constitution."
Regarding the issue of party leadership taking responsibility following the impeachment of former President Yoon Seok-yeol, he said, "We don't have time now," and added, "We don't have time to hold an internal party election."
"I think it's best to run in the presidential election with the current leadership, because there is no way to do that," he said.
"If Lee Jae-myung, the party's chairman, becomes president, he will have two powers, along with an overwhelming majority in the National Assembly," he said, adding, "It is very likely that we will end up in a situation that is beyond anyone's control."
It's frightening. To prevent that, our party must win the presidential election." He also said, "I think that the recent criticism of Rep. Kim Sang-wook within the party is just a sign of the fact that the party is trying to win.
"I think it has gone too far to a certain extent," he said, adding, "Once the ethics committee's findings are released, I believe we will have to abide by them."
On the other hand, in response to a question about whether the party (People Power Party) should distance itself from former President Yoon, he said, "Regarding that issue,
I have heard that the president himself is pondering how he can help rebuild the party and the conservative movement," he said, avoiding an immediate answer.
