The reason why Judge Hyun-bae's assets are less than 400 million won (about 40 million yen) is because he is determined not to deviate from the average person's lifestyle," he said, adding, "The words 'respected judge' come to mind naturally.
In the video released, Democratic Party of Korea lawmaker Baek Hyeri-young said to Moon, "The assets of constitutional justice judges are about 2 billion won on average, but the candidates' assets are 675.45 million won.
"It's about 67 million won (about US$600,000)," he said, asking, "Isn't this too little after 27 years as a judge?"
In response, Moon said, "When I got married, I made a decision. I didn't want to deviate from the average person's lifestyle.
"I looked at the latest statistics and it seems that the average assets per household in Korea is about 300 million won (about 30 million yen). My assets are just under 400 million won," he said.
He added, "The 670 million won includes my father's assets, so my assets are just short of 400 million won. I feel bad that I may have exceeded the average amount."
In response, Rep. Baek appeared uncomfortable and said, "We feel sorry for holding the hearing."
Moon said, "Even after my public service ends, I will not engage in profit-making activities as an attorney."
He also responded to a question about the most important virtue for a public official by saying, "Humility." The post had been viewed 710,000 times as of 10 a.m. today.
Users responded with comments such as, "He has an admirable mindset," "He lives a life of conviction," and "I respect his integrity."
