On the 7th, a forest fire broke out in South Gyeongsang Province, raising the forest fire response level to 2 (Korea)
As the wildfire that broke out in Hadong, South Gyeongsang Province, South Korea, continues to spread, a "Wildfire Response Level 2" has been issued and firefighting efforts have been ongoing for over five hours.
The Korea Forest Service's Central Accident Response Headquarters announced that they had taken measures to prevent the spread of a forest fire that broke out around 12:05 p.m. on April 7 in the Hoesin-ri area of Okjong-myeon, Hadong-gun, South Gyeongsang Province.
In order to quickly extinguish the fire, a "two-stage forest fire response" was announced at 3:30 p.m. on the same day. Forest fire response level 2 is when the expected damage area is 50 to 100 hectares and the average wind speed is 7 to 11 meters per second.
The order is issued when the expected time for extinguishing a fire is between 10 and 48 hours. The fire site is said to be about 3km away from the site of the fire in Sancheong, South Gyeongsang Province, where a large forest fire broke out at the end of last month.
Immediately after the fire broke out, forestry authorities rushed in 21 HYERI helicopters, 37 firefighting equipment, and 397 firefighters to extinguish the fire.
It is believed that the cause of this forest fire was a fire that spread from a lawnmower.
The fire covers an area of 47 hectares, and 1.9 km of the 4.9 km fire containment line has been extinguished, meaning the current fire extinguishing rate is 40%.
The current weather conditions at the wildfire site are northeasterly winds with an average speed of 4.6 meters per second.
The maximum wind speed is 8 meters. Although the wind has calmed down a little, the fire is still spreading. Hadong County has issued an emergency warning to nearby residents of the villages of Hoesin and Yangji.
Emergency evacuation was announced, and 326 residents have been evacuated to date. A man in his 70s who was near the start of the forest fire suffered burns to both hands while trying to put out the fire himself and was taken to the hospital.
Forestry authorities believe the man was working with a lawnmower when the fire started, and will investigate the exact cause of the fire and the extent of the damage once the fire is fully extinguished.
The Forestry Agency's Central Accident Response Headquarters said, "We provided information such as forest fire spread forecast maps so that the on-site integrated command center could issue evacuation orders at the appropriate time to prevent human casualties."
"We will concentrate all available firefighting resources and do our utmost to extinguish the fire," he said.
