According to police, a resident witnessed suspicious behavior at around 3:30 pm on the 21st of last month and reported it to the police.
Police officers who followed them arrested them on the spot. During questioning, Mr. A and the others stated that they were high school students from China. It was confirmed that they had entered Korea on tourist visas three days prior to the incident.
A number of photos of fighter jets were found. The police took Mr. A and others into custody and imposed a departure ban. Mr. A is said to have stated that "taking photos of aircraft has been my hobby for a long time."
Police are investigating from all angles, including the possibility of anti-aircraft intelligence gathering. Currently, through cell phone forensics and other means, it is being determined whether similar activities have occurred at other military facilities or critical infrastructure.
In November last year, a Chinese national was arrested in South Korea for taking drone photos of the National Intelligence Service building, and in January this year, a drone was used to take photos of Jeju International Airport.
Chinese nationals have been arrested for bribing active-duty soldiers to obtain internal military documents.
There have been cases of Chinese people being arrested by the authorities. Since early last year, this Chinese group has been infiltrating public chat rooms attended by soldiers, pretending to be soldiers, and stealing military secrets and other information through one-on-one messages.
They were allegedly trying to bribe people by offering them money in exchange. One soldier from a unit in Yanggu County, Gangwon Province, was actually bribed and was charged with illegally bringing a mobile phone into the unit and accessing the defense network.
It was revealed that the leaked documents, such as plans for the US-ROK joint military exercises, were photographed and provided to the Chinese side. However, it has not been confirmed that any of the leaked documents contain military secrets.
