”What's wrong?” ”It's going ahead on its own” Driver who drove the wrong way at City Hall Station releases dashcam footage = South Korea
The driver involved in the so-called "City Hall Station Wrong-Way Driving Accident" in Seoul, South Korea, which claimed 14 lives, has appealed and released dashcam footage from the time of the accident.
According to a KBS report on the 7th of this month, the lawyer for the driver of the accident, Cha (69), held a press conference at his office in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, and said that
In addition to the dashcam, the police presented multiple pieces of evidence of the sudden start. The dashcam footage showed the car speeding up the moment it left the hotel parking lot on the day of the accident, and Cha and his assistants were seen to be driving away.
The driver in the driver's seat was heard shouting, "What's wrong?" and "The car is going ahead on its own." Cha's lawyer said, "There was no recording of the conversation that could have led to the cause of the accident (on the dashcam)."
"This contradicts the initial explanation from the police that the car was suddenly accelerated." The defense also presented evidence of the sudden acceleration other than the dashcam. The defense argued that the throttle valve opening value and the accelerator pedal
The EDR records, which showed an inverse relationship to the displacement of the darts, were presented as evidence of the sudden acceleration being caused by an ECU (electronic control unit) software defect.
The possibility of an ECU error being the reason why the brake lights of the accident vehicle did not light up was also raised.
Recently, autonomous driving functions have been added to vehicles, and the role of the ECU has become more complex, which means that various errors, such as abnormalities in the signal system, can occur.
They also pointed out that the testimony of National Forensic Service officials during the first trial was contrary to the facts.
Prior to this, in February of this year, the first trial division of the Seoul Central District Court ruled that the driver of the wrong-way accident at City Hall Station
Cha was sentenced to seven years and six months in prison. Cha was arrested and indicted on charges of leaving a hotel near City Hall Station in Jung-gu, Seoul, driving the wrong way down a one-way street and causing an accident in July last year.
Nine people were killed and five injured in the accident. During the investigation and trial, Cha claimed that the car had suddenly accelerated, but the first trial denied this, citing evidence and experiments by the National Forensic Service.
The court said, "No characteristics typical of a sudden acceleration were found," and "the defendant mistook the accelerator pedal for the brake pedal and accelerated or braked in violation of his duties."
"It is reasonable to assume that this occurred because the device was not properly operated," the court ruled. Cha is dissatisfied with the first-instance ruling, and the first hearing of the appeal is scheduled to be held on the 30th.
