President Yoon, with neatly groomed hair and a smileless expression, appears in court... ”I don't want a trial with public participation” = South Korea
Former President Yoon Seok-yeol attended his first formal trial on charges of leading a civil unrest. The Seoul Central District Court held the first hearing of former President Yoon at 10 a.m. on the 14th.
The prosecution will present a summary of the charges against President Yoon and other officials from the Army Capital Defense Command's 1st Security Brigade, Cho Seong-hyun, and the Special Warfare Command's chief, Cho Seong-hyun, are also scheduled to appear in court today.
Kim Hyun-ki, commander of the 1st Special Forces Unit, is also scheduled to be questioned as a witness. President Yoon left his residence in Seocho-gu, Seoul, at around 9:46 a.m. and took his seat in the courtroom four minutes later, at around 9:50 a.m.
Wearing a dark navy suit and wine-colored tie, President Yoon entered the courtroom with a monotone expression. His hair was neatly combed, he sat unsmiling, and spoke briefly with his lawyers.
When the trial began, President Yoon, who was sitting in the defendant's seat, stood up and bowed as the court entered the courtroom. Presiding Judge Ji Gwi-yeon did not directly ask for personal information about the defendant, but only said, "He was born in 1960.
When asked if the court wanted a public participation trial, Yoon Kap-geun, a lawyer representing President Yoon, replied, "No, we don't."
President Yoon nodded in agreement. President Yoon became the first sitting president to be arrested and indicted on January 26th of this year. After the Constitutional Court made the impeachment decision on the 4th of this month, he was arrested as an ordinary citizen.
President Yoon attended the criminal trial 10 days after he was sentenced to 10 years in prison. He also attended the first pretrial hearing of the trial on February 20 this year under detention.
The prosecution said President Yoon conspired with Defense Minister Kim Young-hyun and other military commanders to eliminate state power.
He was indicted on charges of inciting a riot by declaring "December 3 emergency martial law" with the intent of disrupting the national constitution (leading a civil war). Meanwhile, the court said today that the former president Yoon was arrested for security reasons before arriving in court.
As a result, unlike former presidents Lee Myung-bak and Park Geun-hye, former presidents Yoon will not be able to be seen in public, including inside the courtroom.
The proceedings are not open to the public.
