The sinkholes that have recently appeared have one thing in common: they are located near subway stations or underground construction sites. Experts say that the water is flowing from the loose ground caused by large-scale underground construction.
On the 11th of this month, a road collapsed due to subsidence at a tunnel reinforcement work site on the Shin-Asan Line in Iljik-dong, Gwangmyeong-si, Gyeonggi-do. Fortunately, the excavation work site was buried together with the road.
The driver of the plane was rescued, but a POSCO E&C worker, Mr. A, was found dead six days after the accident. The Gyeonggi Nambu Metropolitan Police Agency has appointed a special investigation team led by the head of the criminal task force.
The government plans to hold a press conference to clarify the cause of the accident. Sinkhole accidents continue. On the 15th of this month, a sinkhole measuring 40cm in diameter was discovered about 300m away from the Jungnang-gu Office in Shinnae-dong, Jungnang-gu, Seoul.
On the 13th, a 40cm diameter sinkhole was discovered near Aegoe Station in Mapo-gu, Seoul. On the same day, a 20cm diameter sinkhole was discovered near Gangdong Station in Cheonho-dong, Gangdong-gu.
Sinkholes have also occurred near Apgujeong Station and Dolgoji Station, and repair work has been carried out. Sinkholes have occurred not only in Seoul, but in various other areas.
On the 14th of this month, cracks appeared on the road in Bangok-dong, Wonju City, Gangwon Province, and on the 15th, a 10-centimeter subsidence occurred at the crosswalk in front of Bupyeong Station in Bupyeong-gu, Incheon City.
A sinkhole measuring 5 meters wide, 3 meters long and 4.5 meters deep was discovered in Haeju-dong, Sasang-gu, Seoul. Experts say the hole was created when water seeped into the ground, which had been weakened by large-scale underground construction work.
For this reason, most sinkholes have occurred near subway stations or underground construction sites.
"In the woodworking process, backfilling to harden the ground is not done, so when rainwater or other water flows through, holes form in the ground. These holes grow bigger and bigger, causing the ground to collapse," he explained.
