35-year-old apartment building's parking lot collapses... 120 residents evacuated = South Korea
A retaining wall in the parking lot of an apartment building in Namyangju, South Korea, collapsed, forcing 120 residents to evacuate.
According to the Gyeonggi-do Northern Fire and Disaster Headquarters on the 22nd, at around 1:09 p.m.
An accident occurred in which the retaining wall of an above-ground parking lot of an apartment building in Changhyeon-ri, Hwado-eup, Namyangju City collapsed.
As a result of this collapse, six vehicles parked in the parking lot were lost along with the collapsed retaining wall.
At the time of the accident, there were no vehicles or pedestrians in the vicinity of the parking lot, so no casualties were reported.
120 residents of 40 apartment buildings nearby were evacuated. Fire department officials speculate that the accident was caused by the weakening of the ground due to heavy rain and soil erosion from a storm water drain.
The city plans to carry out an emergency safety inspection, then determine the specific cause of the collapse and begin restoration work. The apartment building where the accident occurred was completed in September 1991 and has one basement floor and five aboveground floors.
There are five buildings, with a total capacity of 220 households.
