Lee Jae-myung, who protects the earth, says ”We will phase out coal-fired power generation by 2040” = South Korean media
On the 22nd, marking the 55th Earth Day, Democratic Party presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung announced that the country will phase out coal-fired power generation by 2040.
He also said that PM2.5 will be dramatically reduced by expanding the use of the technology. On the same day, Lee wrote on social media, "Today is the 55th Earth Day," and said, "Let's revive the dying Earth.
"This is the day that began, but our concerns are only growing," he wrote. "Tonight, I want everyone to join me in turning off the lights for 10 minutes and looking for stars in the sky," he continued.
"From now on, we will have a truly sustainable Korea, and today, we will have Lee Jae-myung protecting the earth," he added. Candidate Lee said, "I will put together a plan that can be implemented right now to protect the environment."
"In the Climate Change Readiness Index (CCPI) released in November 2024 by the global nonprofit organization Climate Action Network (CAT), South Korea ranked 63rd out of 67 countries," Lee said.
"The climate crisis has become a matter of human survival, but the situation will only get worse as time goes on, and there is less time to prevent the crisis," he said.
He continued, "There is a view that the Earth is something we borrow from future generations," and added, "Our one and only Earth will have an impact on our children and the future beyond the present in which we live."
Candidate Lee stressed that he would remove the stigma of being a "climate villain nation" by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Candidate Lee also said, "We will achieve our greenhouse gas reduction target by 2030 and aim to achieve it by 2035 and beyond."
"We will also promptly re-establish a roadmap for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the future," he said. "By hosting the 33rd Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Climate Change (COP33) in 2028, we will take the initiative to make Korea a model for the world in the environmental field as well."
He also said, "We will provide incentives for carbon reduction efforts that involve the public," and "make Korea a leading country in eliminating plastic."
He also said, "We will create a roadmap for going plastic-free in the next national era," and "like a store that sells only the contents of products without packaging to reduce waste, we will create a recycling cycle that the people can voluntarily create."
"We will support the construction of infrastructure for economic bases," he said. Candidate Lee declared that he will develop the bioplastics industry in the medium to long term and create a resource-circulating economy in everyday life.
Candidate Lee said, "I will return PM2.5-free skies to the people," and "I will phase out coal-fired power generation by 2040 and dramatically reduce PM2.5 by promoting the use of electric vehicles."
He also said, "We will cooperate with neighboring countries such as Japan and China to reduce PM2.5," and "We will restore and protect the biodiversity of the Korean Peninsula."
He added, "We will focus on restoring biodiversity in areas affected by wildfires," and "We will gradually expand land and marine biodiversity protection areas and strengthen the functions of the biodiversity committee."
It will be strengthened significantly."
