Defendant A (36, female) was sentenced to one year in prison and detained in court. In July 2012, Defendant A handed over her third daughter, who was three months old, to an unknown person and received 1 million won in cash.
Immediately after the birth, Defendant A placed her daughter in a temporary shelter as she was unable to raise her, and then searched for a buyer for the girl together with her father.
When a buyer was found, Defendant A signed a pledge to "fulfill his parental duties" at the shelter, took over his daughter, and then immediately handed her over to the buyer at the shelter's main gate.
The crime came to light when the government, in the process of conducting a full survey of “children whose births have not been reported,” discovered that although there were birth records, the births had not been reported.
The daughter sold by Defendant A was his third child. It was discovered that Defendant A had given his oldest child up for adoption and had placed his second child in his parents' care.
The court said, "Even if we take into consideration the fact that she gave birth at a young age and without preparation,
"We have no choice but to hold the defendant responsible for repeatedly abandoning his children in violation of the law," he said, but added, "Because this incident occurred approximately 13 years ago, we took into consideration the lack of timeliness in imposing punishment."
Defendant A was detained in court and appealed for leniency, saying that "the second child is at home alone," but the court did not accept Defendant A's argument, saying that "the child should be left at her parents' home again."
