サムスン電子、印ストライキ工場に100億ルピー追加投資…労使関係改善へ
Samsung Electronics to invest additional 10 billion rupees in Indian factory to improve labor-management relations
Indian authorities announced on the 27th that South Korean Samsung Electronics has secured 10 billion rupees (about 168 million euros) from its Sriperumbudur home appliances factory near Chennai in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, where a labor dispute broke out last year.
The state's Minister of Industries TRB Raja announced that the investment shows confidence in the state's workforce.
He emphasized that the plant will create 100 new jobs. In September last year, several hundred of the roughly 1,800 employees at the Sriperumbudur plant filed for recognition of the trade union, improvement of working conditions and wages.
The strike lasted for over a month, demanding wage increases and other measures. In February of this year, about 500 employees refused to work in protest against disciplinary measures.
The factory is a major production base for refrigerators, washing machines and other products, and Samsung Electronics' annual sales in India are about $12 billion (about 1.72 trillion yen).
This accounts for approximately 20% of the total sales of the company (7.5 billion yen).
