People's Power to set up organization to unify presidential primary candidates as early as tomorrow - South Korea
On the 4th, the People Power Party (ruling party) decided to establish an organization to promote the unification of the party's presidential candidate Kim Moon-soo and independent presidential primary candidate Han Deok-soo.
After the National Assembly held a meeting with the election committee, Shin Dong-Wook, chief spokesman for the People's Power, said, "We will quickly establish a unified promotion organization under the election committee and through this, we will be able to cooperate with candidate Han's side.
"We have decided to negotiate the issue of unification with the Democratic Party of Japan," he told reporters. At the closed-door meeting, candidate Kim said, "Our intention to unify the Democratic Party remains unchanged, but we cannot do it without any formalities.
Regarding the timing of when the promotion organization should be established, Shin said, "It should be as soon as possible," but added, "We will decide on a time frame."
"The reason we can't do it is because there is another party involved. We can't do it according to our schedule because there is another party involved, so we need to have contact behind the scenes."
The unification promotion organization is expected to be launched as early as the 5th, following personnel selection and other procedures.
Regarding the 7th and 11th being mentioned as the deadlines for unification, Shin said, "Once the promotion organization is created, it will be considered.
So we will officially check their (Candidate Han's) intentions. Up until now, there has never been an official agreement between the People's Power candidate and Candidate Han's side."
Candidates Kim and Han are scheduled to attend a memorial service at Jogyesa Temple in Seoul at 10 a.m. on the 5th.
Regarding the possibility of former People's Power Chairman Han Dong-hoon, who lost in the final primary election, joining the election committee, Shin said, "Former Chairman Han
He said, 'I need some time to think about it.' It doesn't seem to be a yes or no answer. Candidate Kim spoke to him directly on the phone this morning and he said, 'I'll give it some time to think about it.'"
