Japan, China and South Korea issue joint statement expressing concern over economic fragmentation caused by protectionism and supporting free trade
Japan, China, South Korea and the 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) expressed concern about protectionism and declared that they "support a free trade system centered on the World Trade Organization (WTO)."
They also agreed that "in the event of a sudden external shock, financial support will be available not only in dollars but also in yen and remittances."
According to the Bank of Korea, Governor Lee Chang-yong of the Bank of Korea spoke at the Japan-China-Korea Finance Ministers' Meeting held in Milan, Italy on the 4th (local time).

The WTO also expressed concern that there is a high degree of uncertainty, including the deterioration of the global financial environment and the slowdown in growth of major trading nations.
They agreed to "further strengthen macroeconomic policy dialogue and financial cooperation among regional authorities, while seeking a relevant policy advisory role."
This is the first time that the United States and China have been trading since the imposition of tariffs by US President Donald Trump.
This is believed to be due to the ongoing retaliation between the two sides.
