Singer and actor Lee Seung Gi received the Buddhist Grand Prize. Lee Seung Gi was present at the Buddha's Birthday Celebration Ceremony in the 2569th year of the Buddhist Era, held at Jogyesa Temple in Jongno-gu, Seoul on the 5th.
At the ceremony, he received the 2025 Buddhist Grand Prize and a plaque of appreciation from the Jogye Order's General Director, Monk Jin-woo. The Buddhist Grand Prize is awarded to those who put the teachings of Buddha into practice in their daily lives and live a Buddhist life.
The Jogye Order Buddhist Award Selection Committee said Lee Seung Gi "participated in various Buddhist events" and "was recognized as a Buddhist by his performance as a monk who shaved his head in the movie 'Big Family.'"
"He played a major role in spreading values and emotions," the statement said. Lee Seung Gi met with Democratic Party of Korea presidential candidate Lee Jae Myung, who also attended the event that day, and shook hands with him to congratulate him.
Lee Seung Gi was originally a Christian, but converted to Buddhism before marrying his wife Lee DaIn. Actors Gyeon Mi Ri, Lee DaIn, and Lee Yu Bi are devout.
