The Korean police will strengthen their crime prevention and response capabilities through science and technology such as artificial intelligence (AI) and robots. On the 9th, the Korean National Police Agency announced this year's local police research seminar in cooperation with the Science and Public Safety Promotion Center.
As the second project of the research and development program, Dongguk University announced that it will select and promote two new projects together with related institutions. Dongguk University will act as the lead research and development institution, and will cooperate with the Seoul Metropolitan Police Commission and other related institutions.
In cooperation with the government, the government will promote the "AI-based missing children search and crime prevention business support platform through environmental design."
The system is designed to detect abnormal behavior in advance to prevent crimes, and to quickly locate children if they go missing by detecting traces captured on security cameras.
The company also plans to integrate and analyze crime prevention information and crime occurrence statistics to develop crime prediction models and support crime prevention.
Jeonju National University is the lead research and development institute.
In cooperation with the Jeollabuk-do Local Police Committee, the company will conduct research on the "Establishment of a Safety Management System Using Patrol Robots and Video Sensors" project.
Robots will be deployed on promenades and other areas to detect abnormal behavior. For example, an automatic robot will be deployed on the riverbed of the Jeonju River, where it is difficult to install street lights, and it will use infrared light to detect abnormal behavior at night.
In addition, the company plans to develop a system to detect illegal photography in public restrooms, helping to make all restroom spaces safer.
The National Police Agency of Korea will invest 10.7 billion won (approximately 1.11 billion yen) in national funds from 2022 to 2027 to cooperate with regional research institutes and local police committees to develop regional police force systems.
The aim is to develop science and technology that can solve security problems. Through this, the government aims to build cooperative relationships with research institutes and local police agencies to effectively utilize, complement and develop science and technology.
In 2023, the government plans to launch a "digital AI patrol service for crime-ridden areas to allow women and children to return home safely" in the Daegu area and a "traffic monitoring service" in the Jeju area.
The project "Development of technology to predict accidents and congestion and support on-site traffic management based on on-site data (Jeju Techno Park)" was selected and research is currently underway.
A National Police Agency official said, "The National Police Agency, the Local Police Commission, the City Police Agency, and local research institutes have established a scientific security cooperation system.
"We will strengthen the crime prevention and response capabilities of local police by building a network of police departments and developing scientific security technologies that can resolve local security issues."
