Democratic Party presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung: ”The change in the candidate of the People Power Party is a kind of guard coup” - South Korea
On the 10th, Lee Jae-myung, presidential candidate of the Democratic Party of Korea, claimed that the People Power Party's change of presidential candidate was "a kind of guard coup."
Candidate Lee told reporters in Jinju, South Gyeongsang Province, on the same day, "Because of certain people who are in charge of the party, we cannot legally select the right candidate.
"The Insurrection Party nominated a candidate for the Insurrection Party. How can a candidate for the Insurrection Party take responsibility for the Democratic Republic?
"It's really just laughable," he said. "Political parties are an important mechanism that supports a democratic society. If a political party is not democratic, the democracy of that country will not work."
He added, "This must never be tolerated for the sake of the Republic of Korea and the democracy of this country. The civil unrest must be completely put down."
Also, during a campaign stop in Changnyeong County, South Gyeongsang Province, that morning, candidate Lee met with former Daegu Mayor Hong Jun-pyo.
He mentioned a recent phone call he had with Hong, in which he said, "We need to cooperate," and said, "I think it would be good to have someone as respectable as Chairman Hong with us."
In a phone call with Hong, Lee said, "We both shared the same concern that democracy is being seriously damaged in this way. I want to unify the left and right and focus solely on the national interest.
He also told me that if he ran national affairs solely for that purpose, he would be able to achieve results and become a successful president with high approval ratings."
