According to the Korean legal profession on the 12th, the Seoul High Court, which is hearing the appeal trial of the Lee case on suspicion of instigating perjury, has decided that the defendant was accused of instigating perjury by registering as a presidential candidate last weekend.
The trial date for the instigation of perjury has been changed to a later date. No specific date or time has been specified. Initially, the second trial on the instigation of perjury was scheduled to have pretrial hearings on March 11 and April 1, and the first hearing was held on the morning of the 20th of this month.
The first hearing was scheduled to take place soon. The charge of instigating perjury was that Lee had allegedly forced a secretary to Kim Byung-ryang, former mayor of Seongnam, to give false testimony in a so-called “prosecutor fraud” trial in 2018.
The first-instance court in November 2017 acquitted Lee, stating that he had no intention of instigating perjury, and the prosecution appealed. In the first instance, the prosecution had sought a three-year prison sentence.
The trial on charges of instigating perjury has also been postponed until after the June 3 presidential election, meaning that Lee will not be attending the trial during the official presidential election campaign period.
The trial for the Public Offices Election Law violation was scheduled to be held on the 15th of this month, but has been rescheduled to the 18th of next month.
The trial of the Seoul Seongnam FC corruption charges was scheduled for the 13th and 27th of this month, but was postponed to the 24th of next month at the request of candidate Lee.
The trial for the North Korean illegal remittance case and the Gyeonggi Province corporate card misuse case have yet to begin formal trials.
