Cho Won-jin, head of the conservative South Korean party Our Republican Party, said, "The decision by former President Yoon to leave the party is not something that will be made today.
"I heard that former President Yoon's closest aides are trying to persuade him," he said. On the 14th, Cho appeared on a South Korean radio show and said, "Kim Yong-tae, a former ruling party member,
"The first thing the standing committee chairman (nominee) will say tomorrow (15th) will be about former President Yoon," he said, adding, "It would be bad to continue dragging this out (forever) with the whole nation watching."
Cho said, "Today could be a turning point in this election," and added, "He should leave the party before the TV debate on the 18th at the latest, but today is not the right time."
He continued, "Kim Moon-soo, the ruling party candidate, has said that the demand for former President Yoon to leave the party is 'unreasonable,' but the position of Kim, the emergency response committee chairman, is different.
"In the end, it would probably be best for former President Yoon to sort things out himself. He hasn't said it out loud, but I think that's how things will be sorted out," he said.
He added, "Only by doing so will I believe Kim's approval rating will rise to the 40 percent range."
