Nike to raise product prices in response to tariffs
Nike plans to raise prices on shoes, apparel, and other products. The price hikes are likely to become more serious as supply chains are disrupted by U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff policies.
CNBC reported on the 21st (local time) that Nike plans to raise the prices of some products by $2 to $10 (approximately 310 to 1,550 yen).
Taking into consideration the financial burden on parents with childbirth approaching, the company plans to keep prices unchanged for children's products and products priced under $100 (under 15,500 yen).
By price range, items priced between $100 and $150 will see a $5 price increase, while items priced over $150 will see a $10 price increase.
The popular Air Force 1 sneaker will remain at its current price of $155. A Nike representative said, "Many people wear this product at work, it's comfortable to wear, and it's an affordable price, so it's a great product."
Prices for Jordan apparel and accessories will remain unchanged, but Jordan sneakers will be subject to price increases. Nike said it "regularly evaluates its entire business."
"We are making price adjustments as part of our seasonal planning," the company said, without mentioning tariffs as the reason behind the price hikes.
Nike plans to start selling its products on Amazon again next month for the first time in six years.
Nike products currently sold on Amazon are distributed by independent sellers and are not sold directly by Nike itself.
The German sportswear brand Puma also cut shipments from China to the U.S. earlier this month.
The Reuters news agency reported that Nike's price hike was due to the impact of tariffs on global markets.
"This comes at a time when the move is disrupting global supply chains and affecting retailers' profitability."
