South Korean President Lee Jae Myung: ”We will strive to be included in the G7 Plus”
South Korean President Lee Jae-myung said on the 16th (local time), "If possible, we will strive to become a member of the G7."
President Lee greeted reporters on board Air Force One, which was heading to Calgary, Canada, to attend the G7 Summit that day.
He held a press conference and said about the G7 summit, "There were many opinions that 'it would be better to participate in the G7 summit even if it was a little bit of a stretch,' so contrary to my initial thoughts, I suddenly decided to attend."
President Lee said, "It's only been a few days since I took office, so it's obvious that it's difficult for me to attend an international conference," and "There are a lot of domestic issues at the beginning, so I decided not to attend."
"However, there was also the opinion that 'We need to show the international community that South Korea has returned to normal as soon as possible,'" he said.
"There are many areas in which we can cooperate with the international community," he said. In response to a question about "South Korea restarting summit diplomacy after a six-month hiatus," he said, "South Korea took a step back for a while, but now it is one of the world's top ten economic powers."
"It is one of the top five military powers, and is recognized as a culturally advanced country," he said. "Although it has taken a slight step back, it will quickly regain its former national status, and from now on it will lead the world in a variety of fields."
We must move forward toward becoming such a country. I believe it is entirely possible."
