Former President Yoon plans to not appear at third summons today (19th)…Arrest warrant procedures may move forward? (South Korea)
Former South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol is not expected to respond to the third police summons scheduled for the 19th. The police will wait to see if Yoon turns up that day before deciding whether to release him.
The police are planning to consider taking measures such as requesting an arrest warrant for Mr. Yoon. The special martial law investigation team of the police had notified former President Yoon's side to turn themselves in on the 19th for questioning.
On the 27th of last month, the police had issued the first summons to Yoon's side to appear by the 5th of this month, but Yoon's side refused.
The police then sent a second summons to appear by the 12th of this month, but Yoon's office again did not respond.
Former President Yoon's side has taken the position that the police's request to appear was unjust.
The lawyer's opinion and former president Yoon's own statement were submitted to the National Investigation Agency. The opinion submitted stated, as in the past, that the criminal charges were not established and that the police's request to appear was unjustified.
The letter also states that the plaintiff is willing to cooperate with a face-to-face interview at a third location and with a written survey.
A police official said, "We need to consider the contents of former President Yoon's statement and the defense lawyers' written opinion, so we will wait and see until the 19th."
If Yoon does not show up on the 19th, the police are expected to consider requesting an arrest warrant. However, Yoon's side has mentioned a written investigation and an investigation at a third location.
The police are of the opinion that a face-to-face interview with former President Yoon is essential to the investigation.
So far, the police, together with the High-Ranking Public Officials Crime Investigation Agency, have intervened three times against former President Yoon.
The Supreme Court has also requested that the former president appear before the Supreme Court and subsequently executed an arrest warrant. Former President Yoon is accused of obstructing public duties and inciting a violation of the Presidential Security Law.
