The land was purchased by Applied Materials (AMAT) in August 2023 to build an R&D (research and development) center. The city disclosed that the R&D center will have an area of 21,122 square meters.
The proposed site for the R&D center is 10 kilometers from Samsung Electronics' Hwaseong campus and 10 kilometers from SK Hynix's Yeongi campus, which is scheduled for completion in 2027.
The southern part of Gyeonggi-do is known as the "semiconductor belt" and is home to many semiconductor-related companies.
ASML, a semiconductor manufacturer, is also looking for a site in Gyeonggi Province to build a second R&D center. AMAT's R&D center is targeted for completion in the second half of 2025, but it may be delayed slightly.
For this reason, the government and local governments, including Gyeonggi Province, intend to actively support AMAT so that construction of the R&D center can begin as scheduled.
"If the local government provides support by shortening the construction period, the construction schedule for the R&D center will not be significantly delayed," he said.
