The fire was contained in about 55 minutes. There are concerns that the possibility of EV fires occurring in the hot summer is increasing, similar to the fire that burned down an underground parking lot in Incheon last July.
According to the Gyeonggi Provincial Fire and Disaster Prevention Headquarters and other sources, a Renault Zoe was in the basement of a 25-story apartment building in Shinjang-dong, Hanam City when it was charging at around 7:55 a.m. on the 25th.
The EV caught fire. Fire department officials were dispatched after receiving the report and managed to bring the fire under control at around 8:10 a.m., 15 minutes after the fire started. After that, the EV was towed away in case the battery overheated.
The vehicle was moved to the ground by car and submerged in a mobile water tank, and the fire was completely extinguished at around 8:50 a.m. No human casualties were reported from the fire, but 75 residents heard the emergency bell and evacuated.
It caused a commotion. The sprinklers in the underground parking lot worked properly, and the fire doors in the parking lot opened about 10 minutes after the emergency call, preventing the smoke from spreading to the upper floors, which prevented the damage from spreading.
Fire department officials plan to cooperate with car and battery manufacturers to investigate the cause of the fire.
The Renault Zoe EV that caught fire was equipped with a battery made by LG Energy Solutions.
However, considering that the fire was not strong enough to be extinguished in about 10 minutes, it has been pointed out that the fire may not have been caused by an overheated battery.
