"I witnessed the public shooting of a 22-year-old man for 'distributing over 70 K-pop songs.'"
Kim said, "There have been two public shootings in three months, and at the peak, 12 people were shot in one shooting.
"North Korea enacted the so-called 'Act on the Elimination of Reactionary Ideology' in December 2020, which stipulates the death penalty for those who spread South Korean videos and up to 15 years in prison for those who watch them.
The comments show that this law is being put to practical use. One female defector said, "Since 2015, censorship of mobile phones has become more widespread, and words like 'oppa' (older brother) are no longer allowed in contacts.
"If there was a name, the members of the Youth League forced me to change it to 'Comrade.'" He said that adding a heart mark after the name is also prohibited.
There are also testimonies that say, "During the COVID-19 virus epidemic, many people died of starvation due to food shortages."
"Far more people died from hunger than from disease," Kim said. "Prices of food and daily necessities skyrocketed, and violent crime increased."
Another North Korean defector (in her 20s) said, "Before COVID-19, there were hardly any street children in the open-air market.
"Since then, the number of children who have lost their parents and are wandering the streets has increased significantly," he said. "Women have avoided giving birth due to difficult living conditions, so from 2023, 'When you divorce, you have to pay
The UN Human Rights Office plans to continue taking testimonies from North Korean defectors until the 26th.
This will be reflected in the report of the Commission of Inquiry on Human Rights in North Korea (COI), which will be presented to the UN Human Rights Council in September.
