A strong earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale hits the coast of Alaska, temporarily issuing a tsunami warning
A magnitude 7.3 earthquake occurred off the coast of Alaska. The US Geological Survey (USGS) announced on the same day that the epicenter was at 54.55 degrees north latitude and 16.47 degrees west longitude.
The epicenter was 20 kilometers deep. The earthquake occurred in the ocean about 87 kilometers south of Sand Point, Anchorage.
After the earthquake, a tsunami warning was issued for southern Alaska and the Alaska Peninsula, but it was later changed to a warning.
Alaska is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area with high seismic activity.
