Wi Seong-nak, director of the Presidential National Security Advisor, who returned from a visit to the US to coordinate tariff negotiations and other matters, said on the 24th, “Negotiations on pending issues between the US and South Korea are now at a critical stage and in the final stages.”
The director, who returned to Korea that day after completing his US visit, met with reporters at Incheon International Airport and revealed, “I am conducting detailed negotiations on each area with ministers from economic ministries in Washington.”
Regarding the purpose of his visit to the U.S., the director said, "I went (to the U.S.) because I felt that at this juncture, it was necessary to have a general discussion on the overall U.S.-Korea relationship, including trade, commerce and the security alliance."
During his visit to the U.S., he also met with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, and U.S. Trade Representative Alison Schumer.
He held talks with senior officials of the Donald Trump administration, including Under Secretary of State John Hooker. He was also scheduled to meet with Secretary of State and National Security Advisor Marcos Benjamin Lee Rubio, but due to an emergency, he was unable to attend.
Due to the schedule, they were unable to meet in person. The director explained that they discussed the agenda between the US and South Korea in a wired conversation.
"It can be said that negotiations are currently underway," he said, adding, "We believe it would be appropriate to summarize the ongoing discussions and announce the detailed results separately."
