Apartment fire kills parent and child during long holiday break... Electric scooter battery likely sparks fire (South Korea)

A fire broke out in an apartment in Mapo-gu, Seoul, killing a mother in her 60s and her son in his 20s. The fire is believed to have started in the battery of an electric scooter that was being charged in the room.
According to the fire department on the 18th, a fire broke out at an apartment building in Changcheon-dong, Mapo-gu, around 8:10 a.m. on the 17th, killing two residents and injuring 13.
The room where the fire broke out contained a couple and their son. The son, who was in his 20s, died at the scene, while the mother, who was in her 60s, died after receiving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
He was taken to a hospital but later died. The father, who is in his 60s, suffered burns, and 12 residents were taken to hospital with smoke inhalation. One of the bereaved family members said, "The electric scooter that was charging in my son's room was stolen.
The lithium Eon battery used in electric scooters is weak to pressure due to its structure, and overheating or improper charging can cause internal damage.
A short circuit could cause a violent explosion, and some residents have reported hearing several loud bangs and seeing fire and black smoke.
Police said a chain reaction of heat within the lithium Eon battery caused temperatures to reach 1,000 degrees Celsius within a few seconds.
The fire is said to be similar to a "thermal runaway" phenomenon, where temperatures rise uncontrollably. Furthermore, there were no sprinklers installed on the 14th floor where the fire occurred, which is believed to have exacerbated the loss of life.
When this apartment building was built, the installation of sprinklers was only required on the 16th floor and above. The fire department and police will begin joint investigations from 10 a.m. today to determine the exact point of fire and the cause of the fire.
