The teaser for MBC's new TV series "Go to the Moon" was criticized for caricaturing Middle Eastern culture. In response, MBC immediately removed the video and issued an apology.
On the 21st, MBC's "Let's Go to the Moon" said, "The recently released teaser for the TV series "Let's Go to the Moon" was inspired by the fact that the story of the TV series is set in a confectionery company.
"We decided to create a parody of a famous ice cream advertisement from the 1980s to the 1990s," he said. "In the process, we were unable to take into consideration the position of other cultures.
"We have now apologized for all the footage in question," the company said. "In the future, we will be more careful and cautious in these areas to avoid any inconvenience," the company said.
In the video, actors Lee Sun Bin, Ra Mi Ran, and Jo A Ram are seen performing a series of ethnic dance moves in Arabic costumes, swaying to comical music.
Actor Kim Young-Dae also joins the dance procession, twisting his body while wearing a turban, drawing attention. The four's humorous expressions and gestures also captivate the audience.
The song is a familiar and memorable commercial for Korean viewers, but it has caused some personal issues among overseas viewers. The costumes have become a problem.
Then, reactions began to arise that the show was treating Middle Eastern culture too lightly and that it was racist, and Korean netizens also pointed out that the show lacked respect for other cultures.
MBC, aware of the controversy, quickly deleted the video and apologized. Meanwhile, "Go to the Moon" is about three women who are "dirt spoons" and cannot survive on their monthly salaries alone, but who decide to jump into cryptocurrency investment.
The TV series, which depicts the unfolding story of a hyper-realistic survival, will premiere on September 19th at 9:50 PM on MBC in Korea.
