Driverless buses to begin operating around Cheonggyecheon Stream from late September (South Korea)
Seoul, South Korea, has announced that it will begin operating driverless autonomous shuttle buses around Cheonggyecheon Stream in the city from the end of September. This is the first time that a bus with similar specifications has been operating in South Korea.
The vehicle was developed and manufactured using technology from Autonomous A2Z, a company that develops autonomous driving-related technologies. It seats 11 people and has nine seats, and provides information on the status of autonomous driving and operation information.
It is equipped with various facilities such as large displays and wheelchair lifts. A total of two vehicles will travel a total of 4.8 kilometers around Cheonggye Plaza and Cheonggye 5th Street (Gwangjang Market).
It operates in a circular route. The service runs from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM on weekdays, and is closed on weekends and holidays as the area is closed to vehicles. The fare is free for the time being, and just like city buses, you can tap your transportation card on the dedicated device.
Seoul plans to continue to improve its technology, extend the operating area and develop the system into a fully driverless shuttle bus, while also improving operational performance.
Seoul Metropolitan Government's transportation chief, Yeo Jang-kwon, said, "This will be the first run of an autonomous shuttle bus without a driver's seat, which was the first to be manufactured using domestic technology, so we want to first ensure that citizens can use it safely."
We will create an environment in which this can be done."
