National Security Advisor: ”Peacemaker and pacemaker were President Lee's ideas” - South Korea
South Korea's National Security Advisor Wi Sung-rak said, "This is President Lee's idea," in response to President Lee Jae-myung's reference to the country as a "peacemaker and pacemaker" during the recent Korea-US summit.
In an interview with JTBC on the same day, Director Wei shared the inside story of the Korea-US summit. Regarding President Lee's remarks regarding the security of the Korean Peninsula, he said, "There were various
Opinions were expressed in various places and were put together, but in the end, the president said those words, so I think it's fair to say it was the president's idea."
Earlier, President Lee said at a summit meeting with US President Donald Trump held at the White House in Washington, D.C. on the 25th (local time),
He said that President Trump is the only person who can actually resolve the Korean Peninsula issue, and drew attention by saying, "If the president acts as a peacemaker, I will do my best to support him as a pacemaker."
This comment was made after President Trump said on social media before the summit that the situation in South Korea "looks like a purge or a revolution," suggesting that the Korea-US summit would not proceed smoothly.
It is being evaluated as having helped create a flexible atmosphere amid predictions that the situation would worsen. In particular, it can be seen as demonstrating President Lee's realistic and pragmatic strategy for building peace on the Korean Peninsula.
Regarding President Trump's reference to "purges and revolutions" just before the summit, Wee said, "After seeing that statement, we communicated our position in advance through various channels."
"President Lee also explained the relevant matters, and President Trump directly said, 'It was probably a misunderstanding,'" he said. "I don't think it will become any more of an issue," he added.
Regarding the friendly atmosphere between the South Korean and U.S. leaders, he said, "We held many inter-agency discussions in advance and took into account many opinions from people outside the government. To be honest, the atmosphere was much softer than I had expected."
"So, at the luncheon that followed, they were even more friendly and frank," he added. He added, "President Lee played a major role in handling the situation well."
Regarding the criticism that a joint statement between the ROK and the US was not prepared, he said, "In areas where there was little progress, the extent of detail (of the statement) was unclear, and the outline was unclear.
"There were various discussions about whether to write a joint statement or not," he said, revealing that they had discussed the draft of the joint statement, adding, "We did not get to the point of creating a document, but there was a lot of agreement."
He continued, "Not all summits result in a joint statement," and pointed out, "The previous Japan-South Korea summit also saw the first joint statement in 17 years."
He added, "A significant portion of the discussions between the leaders were broadcast live, and the rest was effectively explained to the people of both countries through press briefings."
Finally, he said, "In the end, we were unable to create a document, but there was a lot of agreement," adding, "If we hold additional discussions based on that agreement, we will be able to reach an agreement."
