Cha (Hak Ja Han) was arrested on suspicion of violating the Political Funds Act. The investigation team is investigating allegations of collusion between the cult and the former Yoon administration. Han's arrest is likely to be a major boost to uncovering the full extent of the case.
Meanwhile, the cult's high donations have become a social issue in Japan, and its unclear relationship with the Liberal Democratic Party has come to light. In October 2023, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology issued an order to dissolve the cult under the Religious Corporations Act.
The Tokyo District Court issued a decision ordering the group's dissolution in March of this year. The Tokyo Shimbun newspaper pointed out, "While the investigation in South Korea is attracting attention, what cannot be ignored is the cult's ties to politics in Japan, particularly the Liberal Democratic Party."
Han conspired with a former executive who served as the head of the Unification Church's global headquarters to assassinate Kwon Seong-dong, a member of the National Assembly belonging to the main opposition People Power Party and a close aide to former President Yoon, in January 2022.
He is suspected of giving 100 million won (approximately 10.6 million yen) in political funds to former President Yoon Seong-dong and asking for his support for the cult. He is also suspected of using a sorcerer to give high-quality gifts to Kim Gun-hee, the wife of former President Yoon.
He is also suspected of giving her a diamond necklace and a Chanel bag and asking her to provide favors for the former Unification Church's business.
Han, 82, was born in 1943 in what is now North Korea during the Japanese colonial period.
At the age of 17, she married the founder of the sect, Sun Myung Moon, who was 40 years old at the time, and had seven sons and seven daughters. Within the former Unification Church, she was known as "True Mother" and led the organization.
After Moon passed away in 2012, he reigned as the cult's leader and wielded great influence. The special prosecutor's investigation team questioned Han for about nine and a half hours on the 17th of this month. End
Later, when asked by reporters why she gave 100 million won to Kwon, she replied, "Is there any reason for me to do something like that?" On the 18th, the investigation team found that she had violated the Political Funds Act and the Prohibition of Solicitation Act.
An arrest warrant for Han was requested on four charges: incitement to destroy evidence, and professional embezzlement. On the 22nd, a hearing was held at the Seoul Central District Court to determine whether or not to issue an arrest warrant for Han. Han was tried for about five hours.
During the investigation, he reportedly said, "I have no interest in Korean politics and I don't know anything about it. I am a super-religious leader and have dedicated my life to spreading peace to the world."
Han is said to have expressed his regret for causing trouble. He was subsequently arrested in the early hours of the 23rd.
According to South Korean news agency Yonhap News, Han was appointed special prosecutor on the afternoon of the 24th.
Han appeared at the inspector's office and was questioned for about four and a half hours, but did not appear on the 26th, citing health problems. He has so far denied the charges.
The investigation team is looking into collusion between the cult and the People Power Party, the ruling party under the previous Yoon administration, and on the 18th of this month, it was revealed that 100% of the party's members were believed to be members of the former Unification Church.
The South Korean newspaper Hankyoreh reported that Han's arrest "is likely to lead to a full-scale investigation into allegations of 'collusion between politics and politics' within the ruling party at the time."
Meanwhile, in Japan, the relationship with the former Unification Church and the Liberal Democratic Party became an issue following the shooting incident of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in 2022. High donations by believers also became a social issue. Following Han's arrest, the National Unification Church
The Association's victim support legal team issued a statement on the 23rd, saying, "We strongly urge you to thoroughly investigate the true nature of the organization and the details of its illegal and fraudulent activities, including the flow of funds from Japan and the instructions given to the Japanese corporation."
Meanwhile, the cult's Japanese headquarters also posted on its former Twitter account on the same day, stating that there was no risk of President Han fleeing or destroying evidence, and commenting, "It is truly regrettable that this situation has come to pass."
