According to the Korea Council, a Korean civic group in Germany, the Mitte district office in Berlin removed the statue of a girl from public grounds within its jurisdiction at around 7 a.m. on the 17th (local time).
The Mitte district office mobilized contractors and police to remove the statue three days after the Korea Council's request for a stay of the removal order was rejected by the court on the 14th of this month.
The Korea Council wrapped the statue in tape and members and local residents took turns guarding it, but were unable to prevent the forced removal.
Han Jeong-hwa, head of the Korea Council, said, "Three activists were guarding the statue, but 25 police officers surrounded it.
Citizens who had been calling for the statue to remain in place gathered at the site of the statue that morning, chanting, "Why are they using violence against the statue again?" and "Is this a substitute for preparing for war?"
The Berlin girl statue was installed in September 2020, and the Mitte district office said, "The two-year installation period for temporary artworks has passed."
Civic groups have been calling for its removal since last year, arguing that "the Berlin city and Matte district authorities, who had tolerated the statue until now, may have changed their position due to lobbying by the Japanese government."
I doubt it.
