He called for closer ties between Europe and Taiwan, saying that Taiwan is not only a foundation for economic prosperity but also for the prosperity of the world. IPAC is an international coalition of parliamentarians from multiple countries formed to check China.
"Vice President Hsiao, considered the second most powerful person in Taiwan after President Lai Ching-te, is the highest-ranking Taiwanese figure to address the European Parliament," the SCMP explained.

The European Parliament responded by saying that Vice President Hsiao and other key figures in the 'Taiwan independence' movement had entered the parliament building to attend meetings, thus allowing Taiwanese separatist activities.
"Such actions undermine China's core interests, violate the one-China principle, interfere in China's internal affairs, and disrupt political relations between China and the EU," he added.
"This undermines mutual trust between the two countries," he said, adding that "China expresses strong indignation and firm opposition to this and has expressed its solemn position to the EU."
