South Korean opposition lawmaker: ”President Lee to go to prison after his term ends”
On the 13th, Bae Hyun-jin, a lawmaker from the People Power Party, the largest opposition party in South Korea, commented on the issue of the prosecution abandoning its appeal in the Daejang-dong case, saying, "(The ruling Democratic Party of Korea)
"The government is focusing on the fact that President Lee Jae-myung will be sent to prison once his term ends," he said. "Regarding the Daejang-dong incident, the government is also thinking about how to shake it off."
On a Korean radio program that morning, Rep. Bae said, "Everyone from the Chief Civil Affairs Office (in the presidential office) to Cho Sang-ho, policy advisor to the Minister of Justice, is involved in the defense of the Daejang-dong case.
"(Looking at this) I think all the public knows where the focus of attention is, which will determine the fate of the Lee administration," he said.
He continued, "(President Lee) suddenly announced at the Cabinet meeting in September this year that 'the prosecution
"The appeal system is being carried out too mechanically," he said without any context. "I have been interested in the Daejang-dong case since September and I don't think I wanted the appeal to be abandoned.
Rep. Bae also argued that the CCTV footage from inside and outside the courthouse on the day the prosecution abandoned its appeal should be made public.
Rep. Bae said, "That day, the investigators were standing there with the appeal letter in their hands until seven minutes before the deadline. They had no intention of appealing.
If that's what he did, then why was he there until the deadline of midnight?" he said, emphasizing, "If he's innocent, we'll make the CCTV footage public."
He added, "Justice Minister Jeong Seong-ho said, 'I simply expressed my opinion that we should make a careful decision.'
"They're trying to brush it off by saying that, but in reality there's footage of him calling investigators multiple times and his reactions, so I think something must have happened," he added.
