中国「中断」・台湾「解除」…台湾、福島産輸入制裁を「全面撤廃」
China ”suspends” import sanctions, Taiwan ”lifts” them... Taiwan ”completely lifts” sanctions on imports of Fukushima products
While China has completely suspended the import of Japanese seafood, Taiwan has lifted all restrictions on the import of Japanese food that had been in place since the Fukushima nuclear accident in 2011.
While the conflict between Japan and China has intensified due to the remarks that suggested "intervention," Taiwan has shown its intention to further strengthen cooperation with Japan.
According to CNA and AFP, the Food and Drug Administration of the Ministry of Health and Welfare of Taiwan announced on the 21st that it will be applied to food imports from five prefectures in Japan, including Fukushima.
"We will lift the sanctions that have been imposed on importers, such as the attachment of certificates of origin and radiation testing, and return to normal management," he said.
"As a result of the investigation, 0% of cases failed," the ministry said, adding that "further radiation testing of Japanese food products is at a level that does not require it." The measures will be implemented immediately.
Taiwanese authorities also stated, "As a result of this measure, the only countries that maintain special import control measures on Japanese food products are now almost exclusively China (including Hong Kong and Macau), Russia, and South Korea."
The measure comes amid escalating tensions between Japan and China following Prime Minister Takaichi's remarks about "intervention in the event of a Taiwan emergency." On the 7th of this month, Prime Minister Takaichi said, "If Taiwan is attacked by China, Japan will exercise military power in addition to the right of self-defense."
Since Japan suggested that it may intervene forcefully, China has responded by resorting to economic retaliation, including issuing travel and study abroad restrictions and suspending imports of Japanese seafood.
Meanwhile, Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te posted a photo of himself eating sushi made with Japanese seafood on social media on the 20th.
The photo was made public, and the representative of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in Japan also called for people to "actively purchase Japanese agricultural products," sending out a series of messages of "solidarity with Japan."
