South Korea's three major convenience stores focus on clothing, achieving double-digit growth
Sales in the clothing category at the three major convenience stores (GS25, CU, and 7-Eleven) have grown rapidly. From November 1st to 21st, GS25 saw sales increase by 22% compared to the same period last year.
0.8%, 7-Eleven 30%, and CU 12.8%. In particular, GS25 saw an increase in sales of "Musinsa Stand" by Musinsa, an e-commerce fashion mall operator.
Sales of the "Dard Express" from September 21 to October 14 increased by 141.9% compared to the initial period of sales from March 5 to 28. As a result, the company is strengthening its collaboration with Musinsa.
CU sells lightweight padded jackets for 20,900 won (about 2,000 yen). They also offer hats in collaboration with Sanrio characters. Seven-Eleven sells them for 32,900 won.
The reason why convenience stores are focusing on clothing is that they can create synergy by combining their nationwide network of about 40,000 stores with clothing sales.
Clothing is also an attractive category for store owners and headquarters. Most items are one-size-fits-all, so there is little inventory burden, and unlike food, there is no risk of expiration dates.
An industry insider said, "Purchasing clothes at convenience stores has become a common practice, and the proportion of clothing sales will likely increase over the next two to three years."
