A total of 11 people, including eight members of the Geoje, Tongyeong, and Goseong Shipbuilding Subcontracting Branch of the labor union, visited the Jamsil branch of Lotte Department Store in Songpa-gu, Seoul.
After attending a rally held in front of the Coupang building, they went to the underground food court of the department store to eat. When the union members entered the store, a person from the department store first approached them at the entrance to the basement floor.
"Please take off your vests and hats," they demanded. At the time, the union members were wearing the Metal Workers' Union vests and hats with red headbands bearing the word "struggle."
The union members expressed their displeasure, saying, "We came here to eat, so why can't we get in?" but they took off their hats anyway, went to the underground food court and sat down.
Two other security guards then arrived and demanded that he remove his vest, citing that "wearing a union vest in a public place is a nuisance to other customers."
Lee Gim Chun-taek, secretary of the Shipbuilding Subcontractors Association, who was at the scene, said, "We don't dress like this in public or at Cheong Wa Dae.
"These standards are set by the department store, but they are the ones that dislike workers," the security guard replied.
When I pointed this out to him, the security guard replied, "I'm a worker too." The office manager said, "Please think carefully about whether this is disgusting." In the end, the security guard said, "Please," and seemed confused.
Lee Gim, the secretary general, said, "It is not a place for VIPs, and it is a shame that a man is treated like this just for wearing a vest, even though he has not done anything wrong. It is a shame for the company's labor union and workers.
The department store apologized after the video showing the incident was viewed millions of times on social media, sparking widespread controversy.
On the 11th, the department store told the media, "We are extremely sorry to the customers who were inconvenienced by our excessive measures, and we will contact the person directly via wired line.
Regarding the controversial union vest attire, the company said, "It could be a nuisance to other customers in the area, so security personnel informed them in advance for safety reasons."
"There are no regulations regarding clothing at department stores," he explained, adding, "The customer refused to remove his clothing, so he finished his meal without any special measures."
According to the department store, the quarrel continued, and several people were unable to eat due to time constraints and had to leave the store. The department store said, "We have reorganized our entry and exit regulations manual and have issued an announcement to all stores and employees.
We will make efforts to prevent similar incidents from occurring."
