Despite his busy schedule leading up to the live event, he graciously agreed to an interview with wowKorea, sharing his passionate thoughts on his new song and his activities in Japan.
Q. This June, your solo single 'Melty Love' will be released, and at the end of June, you will hold your first solo live event in Japan. At this memorable solo debut milestone, could you share any special feelings you have about meeting Japanese fans directly?
I've always wanted to do more activities in Japan.
Last year, after covering the theme song 'Several Billion Light-Years' for a Japanese drama, I had the opportunity to perform on stage at Makuhari Messe with 'Omoinotake'. At that moment, I felt, “Ah, I fit in here in Japan,” and since then, I've been working hard to do more activities in Japan.
This time, I’m honored to have been able to release my original song 'Melty Love' thanks to a certain opportunity, and I want to make the most of this chance that the company has helped me secure and move forward even more. Also, since I can speak Japanese, I think communicating in Japanese is a positive thing for Japanese fans, so I want to continue studying Japanese diligently and have various conversations with Japanese fans.
Q. You wrote the lyrics, composed the music, and arranged 'Melty Love' yourself. Could you share any moments or memorable episodes that inspired you during the production process? If there are specific scenes or emotions that came to mind, please tell us about them.
'Melty Love' is a song that compares the situation of “trying to catch a departing lover but failing” to “melting ice cream.” I tried my best to hold onto the other person, but the harder I tried, the more it didn't work out. I incorporated that feeling into the song. I haven't experienced such a strong love myself, but I thought that if I had, the lyrics might turn out like this, so I participated in the songwriting and composition.
However, since I'm Korean, I don't think I can write lyrics that Japanese people will fully understand or relate to. I want to study more, talk to my friends around me, and improve my skills.
Q. You’ve worked on various songs before, but what kind of song is 'Melty Love' for Jun S?
I think I have a pretty refreshing voice, so I think songs with a refreshing concept like 'Melty Love' suit me well. Also, since it’s summer now, everyone eats ice cream in the summer, right? I made this song while thinking that if it becomes a big hit, maybe I’ll get an offer for an ice cream commercial…!
This is the first song I’ve released as a solo artist, but I’d like to release various songs in the future and show you all different sides of myself.
Q. Your cover videos of Japanese songs on social media have garnered a lot of attention, with one approaching 15 million views. What are your thoughts on this response?
I place great importance on social media activities, and thanks to that, I’ve been able to come to Japan and have had many such opportunities. To be honest, I didn’t expect it to go viral like this, but I’m just honored that I was able to make music I love and that everyone else also came to love it. I want to continue making songs that will be recognized by many people.
Q. Do you cover or create songs that you personally enjoy?
If what I want to do aligns with what listeners are seeking, that would be ideal, but such cases are rare. Therefore, I aim to blend the two and create songs that bring happiness to everyone, whether through singing or composition.
Q. In your busy daily life, are there any things you do to relax or switch your mindset, or any routines you value?
It’s a bit sad, but I don’t have any hobbies lately. I wish I could relax with hobbies when I’m tired from work, but I’ve lost interest in anime and movies that I used to love, which is disappointing. However, when I’m tired from work, I want to work even harder. I believe this has led to the results I’ve achieved, so please continue to look forward to seeing more of Jun S.
Q. What aspects of your solo live performances do you think best represent your unique style?
Until now, I’ve been part of the group GHOST9, but this time I have to perform all the stages alone, so I’m naturally nervous. But I also see this as an opportunity. Since everyone will be watching just me, I want to use this chance to show my best side.
Q. Finally, are there any challenges or new ideas you’d like to incorporate into your future music activities?
I still feel I have a long way to go, but someday I want to become an artist who can stand on a bigger, more glamorous stage like many wonderful artists, and bring happiness to everyone.
