According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), at around 10:23 a.m. on the 5th, a quake hit Hunter, New Jersey,
A magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck the New Jersey Donington County area. The epicenter was in Tewksburry, central New Jersey, about 40 miles west of Manhattan.
"The earthquake lasted about 30 seconds and felt like a loud roar," Cherita Walcott, 38, of the Bronx, New York, told Reuters.
No major damage was reported, but New York Governor Kathy Hochul warned of possible aftershocks. Engineering teams are inspecting roads and bridges.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams said at a press conference that no injuries had been reported. He urged residents to take cover under furniture, in doorways, or next to walls inside buildings during aftershocks.
The earthquake was also observed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Boston, Massachusetts. Aircraft takeoff and landing in the northeastern United States were also disrupted.
Air traffic was temporarily halted at JFK International Airport, Newark International Airport and LaGuardia Airport in the New York area, but resumed around 12:30 p.m.
The quake is the most powerful since the magnitude 5.8 earthquake that hit Virginia in 2011.
