A whopping 1 trillion cicadas... a swarm of cicadas covering the American continent this spring
This spring, a swarm of giant cicadas totaling one trillion will appear in the United States. It will be the first such swarm since 1803.
The New York Times reported that "Around April of this year, 1 trillion tigers were killed, the first time since 1803.
"Swarms of cicadas will appear in 16 states in the Midwest and Southeast of the United States," the agency said. This is the first time in 221 years that a huge swarm of cicadas will appear, and this year is the first time that a "periodic cicada" will appear in large numbers in 10 to 19 years.
This is because this is the year when Brood 19 and Brood 13 of the "cicadas" will appear at the same time. A single cicada is a little over an inch long, but if you lined up a trillion of them in a row, they would be about the same length.
It will be 15,780,282 miles long, enough to travel from the Earth to the Moon and back 33 times.
Cicadas, whose life span is about one month, die not far from where they emerged.
Although they give off a foul smell that resembles rotten nuts, these cicadas are not pests themselves because they do not bite or sting people or animals, and do not carry any disease.
Rather, they act like "gardeners" to help the trees in the garden grow well. The holes made by the larvae when they emerge from the soil improve the soil's aeration, allowing summer rain to seep into the soil and provide nutrients to the roots.
The dead cicadas also provide nutrients in themselves.
