Mass deaths of over 200 large loons in Pohang... Investigation underway
The city of Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province, South Korea, has launched an investigation after a mass death of loons on a beach.
According to the Pohang City government on the 11th, from around the 3rd of this month until recently,
On the 3rd, a citizen who was out walking noticed a flock of dead black-bodied birds on the beach.
After removing the body of the loon on the morning of the 11th, the body of another loon was discovered, swept away by the seawater. The body was in an advanced state of decomposition.
It was reported that the beach where the dead loon was found was a place where garbage and seaweed had been washed in from inland due to the characteristics of the topography and ocean currents.
To date, the body of loons discovered is over 200 birds.
The city took samples and sent them to the Wildlife Disease Control Center for testing.
The dead bird was initially reported as a cormorant, but after checking by the National Wildlife Disease Control Agency, it was confirmed to be a loon, a large bird that lives near the coast.
A city official said, "Once the investigation results are out, we will be able to find out the reason why the wild birds died in large numbers."
