South Korean spy agency tightens restrictions on imitation guns sold online overseas
On the 15th, the National Intelligence Service of Korea announced that it has launched a countermeasure to prevent unauthorized imports of "items that threaten national security" sold on major overseas online shopping sites into the country.
Recently, overseas mail-order websites, which have seen a rapid increase in users due to their aggressive marketing strategies, are the main targets of the inspections.
Because restrictions are weak, it has been found that items that are banned from being imported, such as gunpowder-powered percussion guns, bird-killing guns and crossbows, can easily be purchased.
In addition, there are many homemade firearm parts and shooting equipment that use them for which there are no clear regulations regarding import restrictions.
The hospital recently conducted firing experiments on percussion guns and homemade gun modifications and production using these items, which were actually purchased from online shopping sites.
In tests using gelatin as a target, it was confirmed that these weapons could cause fatal injuries. Based on the results of this test, the National Diet will cooperate with relevant agencies to reduce the number of dangerous items entering the country.
The ministry has decided to implement additional measures to prevent the importation of dangerous goods. The ministry said, "In accordance with the Anti-Terrorism Act and other relevant laws, we will work with the Anti-Terrorism Center to ensure the safe management of dangerous goods from overseas."
