Samsung takes first place in global smartphone market in January-March, notable growth of Chinese manufacturers - South Korea
According to US research firm IDC, Samsung Electronics will ship 60.1 million smartphones in the January-March quarter of 2024. Its global market share will be 20.8%, ranking first.
During the same period, Apple's shipments totaled 50.1 million units, giving it a market share of 17.3%, placing it in second place. In third place was China's Xiaomi, and in fourth place was China's Transsion.
The number of shipments was 40.8 million and 28.5 million, respectively, with market shares of 14.1% and 9.9%, respectively. Global smartphone shipments in 2023 will total 289.4 million units, down from the previous year.
It increased by 7.8% year-on-year. At the same time, the growth of Chinese manufacturers was notable. Xiaomi and Transsion increased their shipments by 33.8% and 84.9%, respectively.
Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics' shipments were down just 0.7% compared to the January-March period last year, while Apple's were down 9.6%.
"We expect Samsung Electronics and Apple to maintain their leading positions in the high-end market," said Ryan Reis, vice president of IDC's Mobility and Consumer Device Tracker group.
However, with Huawei's recovery in China and the remarkable growth of Xiaomi and Transsion, the top two companies are likely to expand and diversify their fields.
"It is likely that they will search for it," he predicted.
