South Korea to hold government-led conference to promote AI semiconductor development, aims to join top three countries in the world
President Yoon Seok-yeol has proposed the "AI Semiconductor Initiative," an initiative that aims to make South Korea one of the world's top three countries in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) and semiconductor technology.
To create an action plan, the AI Strategy Council held its first AI Semiconductor Subcommittee Meeting. The meeting included memory semiconductor companies such as Samsung and SK Hynix.
Participants included cloud companies such as KT and NHN Cloud, AI companies such as LG's AI Research Institute, AI semiconductor companies such as Sampo, as well as AI and AI semiconductor specialists from academic societies and research institutes.
The AI Semiconductor Initiative is a set of nine innovative technologies ranging from AI models to AI semiconductors and AI services that combine hardware and software, as well as investment, human resource development, infrastructure, and overseas expansion.
The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy will reflect the contents of the discussions at the conference in their policies and will also launch a "K-Cloud Alliance" initiative.
The plan is to promote communication between industry, academia and research through cooperation channels between the public and private sectors, such as setting up the "AI Semiconductor Answers" organization and holding the "AI Semiconductor Collaboration Forum."
In addition, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy is promoting cooperation between supply and demand, research and development (R&D) support, and testing and inspection.
The government plans to provide comprehensive policy support, including building infrastructure for credit and fundraising.
